한국이 인공지능(AI) 반도체 시장에서 미국의 엔비디아에 도전장을 내민다. 국내 AI 반도체 스타트업, 클라우드 기업, 그리고 정부가 ‘차세대 AI 반도체 팀워크’를 통해 이를 이루고자 한다. 이를 위해 정부는 ‘K-클라우드 프로젝트’를 시작하여 국산 신경망처리장치(NPU) 반도체의 상용화를 지원하고있다. 국내 클라우드 기업들이 운영하는 데이터 센터에 NPU 반도체를 탑재해 대량 사용 실적을 만들고있다 .이들은 글로벌 수출을 목표로 한다.
과학기술정보통신부는 올해부터 2030년까지 총 8262억원을 총 3단계에 걸쳐 AI 반도체 상용화 및 고도화 지원에 투입할 계획이다. 이를 통해, 국내 클라우드 기업들의 데이터 센터에서 국산 NPU의 성능을 검증하고, 실적을 쌓아나갈 예정이다.
AI 반도체는 특히 AI 알고리즘에 최적화된 고성능·저전력 프로세서로, 현재 엔비디아가 거의 독점하고 있는 GPU의 후계 제품이다. 이에 따라 한국이 성공적으로 AI 반도체를 개발하고 상용화를 목표로하고있다. 엔비디아가 지배하고 있는 시장에 큰 변화를 가져올 수 있다. 이는 인공지능 기술의 발전에 따른 AI 반도체의 중요성 증대 및 반도체 산업의 경쟁력을 고려할 때, 매우 중요한 전략적 도전이다.

Korea challenges Nvidia of the United States in the artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor market. Domestic AI semiconductor startups, cloud companies, and the government are trying to achieve this through ‘next-generation AI semiconductor teamwork’. To this end, the government started the ‘K-Cloud Project’ to support the commercialization of domestic neural network processing unit (NPU) semiconductors, mount NPU semiconductors in data centers operated by domestic cloud companies to create mass use results, and promote global exports.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to invest a total of 826.2 billion won from this year to 2030 to support the commercialization and advancement of AI semiconductors in three stages. AI Semiconductor is a high-performance, low-power processor optimized for AI algorithms, and is the successor to GPU, which is currently almost monopolized by Nvidia. Accordingly, if Korea successfully develops and commercializes AI semiconductors, it can bring major changes to the market dominated by Nvidia. This is a very important strategic challenge considering the increasing importance of AI semiconductors and the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry following the development of artificial intelligence technology.
